Following a spell in prison due to a case of mistaken identity, humble tax collector Ning Leslie Cheung escapes and plans to return to where he first met his ghostly love Tsing. On the way he comes across a band of guerrillas led by a young woman named Windy Joey Wong, who bears an uncanny resemblance to his former lover. Once again mistaken for someone else, Tsing joins Windy and her warriors in a quest to rescue Windy's imprisoned and soon to be executed father from the Imperial Court. But their journey is hampered by corrupt politicians, monstrous beasts, ghosts and demons. Their only hope lies in the help of a skilled young warrior named Autumn Jacky Cheung and the elder swordsman Yen Wu Ma.
